Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Três Corações, October 23, 1940 - São Paulo, December 29, 2022), better known as Pelé, was a Brazilian footballer who played as a forward. Described as the "King of Football", he is widely considered to be the greatest athlete of all time. In 2000, he was named Player of the Century by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) and was one of two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the Century award. That same year, Pelé was named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee. According to the IFFHS, he is the fifth highest goalscorer in the history of football in official matches, having scored 767 goals in 812 matches. In total, he scored 1,283 goals in 1,363 matches (including unofficial friendlies), a Guinness World Record. During his career, he was for a period the highest paid athlete in the world.
